If you don't already have a monthly newsletter, you need to start one. Newsletters are a great way to stay in front of your previous clients and potential leads. You don't really even need to think up the content to put on the newsletter, since you can simply showcase your recent projects you've worked on.
- Start building a list. There are many ways to do this, the simplest being by keeping a file with the email addresses of potential clients you have spoken with, and simply setup a distribution list or just BCC them. Once you start to build that list, I'd recommend getting an aweber account setup, for better managements.
- Get a design done. Your newsletter design doesn't have to be crazy, it can be minimalistic, and actually I wouldn't strongly recommend you keep it that way, but it should be nice. It should be something that your clients are going to have a positive response to. Something that wil pleasantly surprise them and that they'll look forward to reading.
- Announce your work. As you finish up projects - whether they are design or development or both - its always fun to announce them to the world. You have a sense of pride in the work that you've done and its nice to blast it out. Also - you can offer this as a value-added service to your clients. Shoot - you could even charge for it, depending on how large your list is.
- Follow-up on the leads. You will be surprised how many people will consistently respond to your newsletter with requests on new projects. Something in your newsletter will remind them of a project they have on the back burners, or they will simply see your name and have a positive response to it, and think - "oh this would be a great person to use for the project I have to do!" You have to realize that not many people actually have newsletters, and its a great way to differentiate yourself, and also makes people feel like you know what you are doing!
