Showing the Link Love: Some Basic SEO

Wanted to lay out some of the basic SEO stuff that I'm aware of. I'm sure we're all aware of the basic principle of websites being ranked higher in search engines based on the number of links to that site and the popularity of the sites linking to it.

Based on that fact, many people attempt to strategically build incoming links to their site. This can work well, except that there are also some measure's in place for search engines to catch you if you're trying to game the system. For example, if the incoming links don't build gradually over time, they will recognize that you probly purchased the links and will ding you for it.

Also you want to make sure that the links coming to your site are from sites in a related niche or industry. You don't want to just purchase links from any old site that will give them to you, if they are out of context. You want to build links within your niche. This helps because it causes you to build relationships with other like-minded bloggers or webmasters.

As a general rule, one thing to keep in mind while you're zealously trying to increase your search-engine rankings, is that the search engines will continue to evolve in order to accomplish one thing: to bring the best content to the top. As a long term strategy, you're better off working on that, as opposed to constantly attempting to game the system.
